The Dutch government offers a variety of support for entrepreneurs, ranging from financial assistance to making life easier. If your idea meets the criteria of one of the subsidy programs, it is possible to apply for a grant through the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO).
Subsidies are basically government support for certain activities or industries that would not be profitable without it. They are usually provided to help struggling sectors, encourage new developments, or to promote a specific program or social good. They could be profitable economically however, they come at a cost to other groups (for instance the food subvention aids farmers, but raises prices for consumers) They may also fail economically, but they accomplish political and cultural goals.
Government-provided subsidy can take a variety of forms, such as grants or tax breaks, rebates and direct cash payments to customers or suppliers, and price controls. They can also be indirect as well like road tax which is paid by all motorists, not only those who travel on roads, or railway access charges that are not limited to passenger trains.
Subsidy advocates argue that they can increase efficiency of the economy by protecting from international competition or by promoting domestic production. They can also help to counteract market failures, like externalities and information imbalances. But, critics contend that such policies can have negative consequences, ranging from corruption to inequality, and that they impede more equitable and efficient public spending. They also can result in perverse incentives. For instance, a business that is benefited by a government subsidy may be enticed to make donations to politicians, which can contribute to “regulatory capture” and rent-seeking.
